University of Stuttgart wins bicycle repair column

December 15, 2021 / HKom+kur

Students and employees successfully pedaled in the STADTRADELN campaign and won a bicycle repair column for the university. And there will be more to come!

For three weeks starting June 20, 2021, students and employees swung into the saddle and recorded distances they traveled by bicycle. This commitment has now been rewarded by the initiative RadKULTUR [DE] and the STADTRADELN campaign for climate protection with the special prize for the most cyclists in the race. As a result, the University of Stuttgart wins a RadService Point in the form of a bicycle repair column, which will be installed on the Stadtmitte campus in the coming year.

About STADTRADELN and RadKULTUR

STADTRADELN is campaigning for climate protection and the promotion of cycling. STADTRADELN is an inter-municipal cycling competition in which citizens collect cycling kilometers within a set period of time. Participants cover everyday journeys by bicycle, join together in teams, record the kilometers covered and thus experience the benefits of commuting by bike in a motivating way. The Baden-Württemberg Ministry of Transport supports STADTRADELN as part of the initiative RadKULTUR since 2017 and supports the participation fees of the municipalities with a total of about 250,000 euros.within the framework of the initiative. More bike repair stations for even more sustainability

And there is even more reason to be happy: Together with the bicycle workshop of the student council stuvus, the Green Office was able to raise funds for the expansion of the bicycle workshop and bicycle repair stations through the university's internal funding line Una Terra [DE] with the project Rad und Tat. The intention is to create another bicycle repair workshop on the Stadtmitte campus and three more bicycle repair stations on the Vaihingen campus.

The project Rad und Tat wants to contribute to making the university more bicycle-friendly. The bicycle workshop is an important part of this. Students and employees can lend a hand there and make old bikes roadworthy again. Daniel Siebert, head of the bicycle workshop, is particularly keen to ensure that everyone has the opportunity to repair bicycles there. Prior knowledge is not necessary for this. "In our consumer society, goods are often replaced directly as soon as they are broken," Siebert complains. "This means that scarce resources are used up unnecessarily. This is precisely where a rethink needs to take place. For example, the global climate also benefits from an increase in bicycle traffic due to falling per capita emissions."

As part of the Rad und Tat project, there will also be a public bicycle repair campaign during the Mobility Weeks 2022. In addition, new tools worth 2,500 euros have been ordered. The three anthracite gray columns for the Vaihingen campus have already been ordered and will be delivered next year. The structural work is also already being planned so that the bicycle repair columns can be installed promptly.  They will be distributed around the campus in such a way that they can be easily used by both students and employees. The bicycle repair columns complement the services offered by the stuvus bicycle repair shop and enable all university employees to carry out minor repairs independently, even outside the opening hours of the bicycle repair shop.
