We bid farewell to our highly esteemed faculty member Prof. Dr.-Ing. Jörg Schlaich. Born in 1934 in The Länd, he studied architecture and civil engineering in Stuttgart, Berlin and Cleveland, Ohio/USA and received his doctorate in 1963 in Stuttgart. After working in engineering practice, he was appointed in October 1974 as successor to Fritz Leonhardt to the chair of solid construction at the then Institute for Construction and Design II (now merged into the Institute for Leichtweight Structures and Conceptual Design ILEK) of today's Faculty 2. Here he researched and taught until the new millennium.

He was an internationally recognized expert and designer of filigree engineering structures. These include in particular his cable net constructions, which he shaped into unconventional bridges and towers. Examples include the roofs at the Olympic site in Munich, Killesberg Tower, the road bridge in the course of Vaihingen's eastern bypass, the roof of the Neckasrstation, the ZÜBLIN House as well as various interior pedestrian bridges in Stuttgart and an updraft power plant in Manzanares/Spain.

The large number of his awards from Germany and abroad are proof of his recognition in professional circles and in the public.

The faculty thanks Jörg Schlaich for his many years of service and will remember him as a dedicated researcher and university teacher. Translated with www.DeepL.com/Translator (free version)
