The European Community on Computational Methods in Applied Sciences (ECCOMAS) has awarded on its conference in Glasgow at the beginning of June 2018 to the former Director of the Institute for Structural Mechanics of the Faculty, Professor Dr.-Ing. Dr.-Ing. E.h. Dr. h.c. Ekkehard Ramm, the Leonhard Euler Medal for "outstanding and sustained contributions in the field of Computational Solid and Structural Mechanics". The medal has been awarded since 2008 and only every two years. ECCOMAS honors Professor Ramms for his many years of outstanding research in the modeling and numerical simulation of thin-walled structures.

With his groundbreaking work on static and dynamic nonlinear structural analysis, novel finite element models, structural optimization, material modeling and fluid-structure interaction, Prof. Ramm has contributed significantly to the international visibility of the University of Stuttgart in the field of simulation technology.

ECCOMAS is the umbrella organization founded in 1993 of 23 scientific societies (active in 33 European countries) dealing with the development and application of computer-aided methods in science and technology. German member organizations are the GACM (German Association of Computational Mechanics) and the GAMM (Gesellschaft für Angewandte Mathematik und Mechanik).
