On July 14, 2021, disaster struck the Ahr Valley. One year later, the traces of the devastation can still be seen almost everywhere. Reconstruction has begun - and yet anger and frustration are growing: Many are still waiting for the promised funding. After the emergency aid of the first weeks, the impression is that bureaucracy is slowing down the reconstruction, which is also being argued over: How should the Ahr Valley be resurrected? As quickly as possible or, above all, sustainably with new concepts for better flood protection?

Petra Wagner discusses in the context of a SWR 2 Forum broadcast with Prof. Dr.-Ing. Jörn Birkmann from the faculty's Institute of Spatial and Regional Planning (IREUS), Anke Petermann, Rhineland-Palatinate correspondent of Deutschlandfunk and Cornelia Weigand, District Administrator of the Ahrweiler district.
