How can green facades be optimized in terms of building physics as well as designed to promote biodiversity in order to do justice to PEOPLE as well as FLORA and FAUNA?

This holistic research question of the faculty's Institute for Acoustics and Building Physics (IABP) is to be answered by developing and investigating a mock-up on the campus in Vaihingen.

The project includes the creation of a green façade mock-up that is optimized in terms of building physics and promotes biodiversity. For the first time, the effects of the green façade on HUMANS, FLORA and FAUNA will be considered holistically. The developed mock-up should not only show a heterogeneous plant composition with changing and high flowering occurrence (as well as nectar and pollen content), but also an increase of structural richness and nesting sites for e.g. ground-nesting wild bees. The physical effects on the building components behind and the interior must always be taken into account. In addition to improving the microclimate (especially on hot summer days), the aim must always be to keep the building components free of damage and, at best, to increase the comfort of the room.

The mock-up will be installed in a central and visible location on the Vaihingen campus in consultation with the University of Stuttgart and will be supported by IABP beyond the funding period. The installation will take place in September 2021 and will be in full bloom for the first time in spring 2022. The funding is provided under the university's own funding line Una Terra for the period August 1 to December 31, 2021. The implementation was carried out in collaboration with Helix Pflanzen GmbH.
