sewage treatment plant for research and education (LFKW) is not only responsible for the wastewater of the Vaihingen campus (incl. dormitories, Media University, Fraunhofer and Max Planck Institutes), but also for the wastewater of the residential area of Lauchhau-Lauchäcker and the village of Büsnau. First, the wastewater passes through one oof the two coarse screens (bar spacing: 20 mm), which is mechanically cleaned by a rake. Via a cross conveyor the screenings pass into a washing line. Here the organic matter is washed out, then the rest is dewatered and pressed. Primarily, paper is collected here. 

Water flows through the fine screens. The screw transports the screenings upwards into the cross conveyor, where they are also dewatered.

In the grit chamber, air bubbles reinforce the existing circulation flow.

In a primary clarifier, which is reached by a drop chute, the water flows against a baffle wall. Heavier particles settle at the bottom, water and floating matter (especially grease) remain at the top. The scraper conveys sludge and floatables into a sludge hopper. 

The sludge is pumped directly into a digestion tower, and sludge from primary clarifiers 2 or 3 can be removed.

In the denitrification tank, the wastewater is mixed with return sludge, and the bacteria in it can denitrify with the undegraded carbon. The water then enters the aeration basin.

The oxidation ditch consists of individual basins, into each of which air is blown through 50 aerator elements. The air keeps the bacteria in suspension and provides the necessary oxygen. The compressed air is generated in four compressors, of which normally only two are needed, and distributed from there to the basins. Measuring devices installed in the basins regulate the air supply on the basis of the oxygen content of the water.

After the fourth stage, the water is as clean as after the rotating biological contactor unit and is discharged together with the sludge through slide gate structures into one of the three secondary sedimentation tanks. In the first part of the second one, the water flows vetrically, sludge sinks to the bottom, clear water passes the overfall edge.

In the round secondary settling tank, the water flows in through the central structure, the sludge also settles, and the clear water flows over the overflow edge.

The settled sludge is pumped back into the denitrification tank by one of two pumps.

For further solids separation, a microscreen drum is installed, the water flows in at the center, passes through the filter membranes where the solids remain suspended, and then exits the LFKW.

The receiving water of the LFKW, the Bandtälesbach, contains very little water during dry periods; this changes only after the effluent  the LFKW.

Wastewater from the primary sedimentation tanks also enters the rotating biological contactor (RBC) hall. The brown substance on the three drums is the biofilm that does the cleaning. When this is submerged, biofilm filaments spread out and are pulled through the water. At the end of the second drum, the effect is clearly visible, the water is clear and contains only individual biofilm flakes that have detached from the drum. The film is very thick on the first drum because there is significantly more food available for the biofilm than on the second drum.

The LFKW has a complete basement, here water samples can be taken from all parts of the basin and transported to the experimental hall or to other basins.

The sludge is processed into biogas by bacteria in digesters. The residual sludge then flows into the post-thickener, and the biogas is collected. Between 60,000 and 80,000 m³ of biogas is produced each year, which is used in a cogeneration plant, providing 60% of the LFKW's electricity needs.

The residual water produced during sludge dewatering is stored and treated separately.

The dry sludge is transported by a screw conveyor into containers and on to the Mühlhausen central wastewater treatment plant in Stuttgart. There it is incinerated.

Das Lehr- und Forschungsklärwerk ist nicht nur für die Abwässer des Campus Vaihingen (inkl. Wohnheime, Hochschule der Medien, Fraunhofer- und Max-Planck-Institute), sowie auch für die Abwässer des Wohngebietes Lauchäcker/Lauchhau sowie des Stadtteils Büsnau zuständig. Zuerst passiert das Abwasser den Grobrechen (Stababstand: 20 mm), der durch eine Harke gereinigt wird. Über einen Querflörderer gelang das Siebgut in eine Waschstraße. Hier wird die Organik ausgewschen, dann wird der Rest entwässert und gepresst. Vorrangig wird hier Papier aufgefangen. 

Das Feinsieb wird vom Wasser durchströmt. Die Schnecke transportiert das Siebgut nach oben in den Querförderer, dabei wird es auch entwässert.

Im Sandfang verstärken Luftblasen die vorhandene Zirkulationsströmung.

Im Vorklärbecken, das durch einen Fallschcht erreicht wird, fließt das Wsser gegen eine Prallwnd. Schwerere Partikel setzen sich unten ab, Wasser und Schwimmstoffe (vor allem Fett) verbleiben oben. Der Räumer befördert Schlmm und Schwimmstoffe in einen Schlammtrichter. 

Der Schlamm wird über eine Pumpe direkt in einen Faulturm befördert, dabei kann Schlamm aus den Vorklärbecken 2 oder 3 abgezogen werden.

Im Denitrifikationsbecken wird das Abwasser mit Rücklaufschlamm vermischt, die darin enthaltenen Bakterien können mit dem nicht abgebauten Kohlenstoff denitrifizieren. Das Wasser gelangt dann ins Belebungsbecken.

Das Belebungsbecken besteht aus einzelnen Becken, in die jeweils durch 50 Belüfterelemente Luft eingeblasen wird. Die Luft hält die Bakterien in der Schwebe und sorgt für den notwendigen Sauerstoff. Die Druckluft wird in vier Kompressoren erzeugt, von denen normalerweise nur zwei benötigt werden, und von dort in die Becken verteilt. 

In die Becken eingebaute Meßgeräte regeln anhand des Sauerstoffgehlts des Wassers die Luftzufuhr.

Nach der vierten Stufe ist das Wasser so sauber wie nach dem Scheibentauchkörper und wird mitsamt dem Schlamm durch Schieberbauwerke in eines der drei Nachklärbecken abgeleitet. Im ersten Teil des zweiten Nachklärbeckens strömt das Wasser vetrikal, Schlamm sinkt nach unten, Klarwasser passiert die Überfallkante.

Beim runden Nachklärbecken fließt das Wasser durch das Mittelbuwerk ein, der Schlamm setzt sich ebenfalls ab, das Klarwsser strömt hier am Rnd über die Überfallkante.

Der abgesetze Schlamm wird durch eine von zwei Pumpen ins Denitrifikationsbecken zurückgepumpt.

Zur weitergehenden Feststoffbabtrennung ist eine Mikrosiebtrommel installiert, das Wasser fließt in der Mitte ein, durchquert die Filtermembranen, wo die Feststoffe hängen bleiben, und verlässt dann das LFKW.

Der Vorfluter des LFKW, der Bandtälesbach, enthält bei Trockenheit sehr wenig Wasser, das ändert sich erst nach dem Ausluf aus dem LFKW.

In die Scheibentuchkörperhalle gelangt ebenfalls Abwasser aus den Vorklärbecken. Die braune Substanz auf den drei Trommeln ist der Biofilm, der die Reinigung durchführt. Wenn dieser eintaucht, spreizen sich Biofilmfäden ab, die durchs Wasser gezogen werden. Am Ende der zweiten Trommel ist die Wirkung deutlich zu sehen, das Wasser ist klar und enthält nur noch einzelne Biofilmflocken, die sich von der Trommel gelöst haben. Der Film ist auf der ersten Trommel sehr dick, da dort deutlich mehr Nahrung für den Biofilm zur Verfügung steht als bei der zweiten Trommel.

Das LFKW ist komplett unterkellert, hier können an allen Beckenteilen Wasserproben entnommen und in die Versuchshalle oder in andere Becken transportiert werden.

Der Schlamm wird in Faulbehältern von Bakterien zu Biogas verarbeitet. Der Restschlamm fließt dann in den Nacheindicker, das Biogas wird aufgefangen. Zwischen 60.000 und 80.000 m³ Biogas wird jedes Jahr produziert, das in einem BHKW genutzt wird und so 60 % des Strombedarfs des LFKWs deckt.

Das bei der Schlammentwässerung anfallende Restwasser wird gespeichert und separat behandelt.

Der Trockenschlamm wird mit einer Schnecke in Container und weiter in das Stuttgarter Zentralklärwerk Mühlhausen transportiert. Dort wird er verbrannt.
