Prof. G. Grün strengthens Building Physics

September 4, 2019 / HKOM/Ulrich Rentschler

Since yesterday (September 3rd), Prof. Dr.-Ing. Gunnar Grün is professor for building physics at the faculty. He brings in his competence and expertise in teaching and research to the Institute of Acoustics and Building Physics.

The appointment was made in cooperation between the University of Stuttgart and the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft zur Förderung der angewandten Forschung e.V. (Fraunhofer Society for the Promotion of Applied Research, FhG), in the framework of the so-called Berliner Modell. Prof. Grün is professor of building physics at the faculty as well as deputy director of the Institute for Building Physics of the FhG (FhG-IBP). Even though his teaching duties at the FhG-IBP are limited due to his extensive tasks, he will strengthen classical building physics at the Institute for Acoustics and Building Physics of the Faculty.

His scientific life until now:

  • 1999-2005: Studies of Civil Engineering at the University of Stuttgart and the University of Calgary/KANADA, Degree: Dipl.-Ing.
  • Since 2005: research assistant, later group leader for indoor climate systems, later head of the department for indoor climate at FhG-IBP
  • 12/2008: Doctorate (Dr.-Ing.) at Faculty 2 of University of Stuttgart on the modelling of a comfort index for the assessment of the indoor climate using the example of a passenger aircraft cabin
  • Since 2016: deputy director of the FhG-IBP
  • 1/2015 until 8/2019 Professor for system integration of efficient buildings, Nuremberg Tech (Technische Hochschule Nürnberg Georg Simon Ohm)

Climate protection goals and concepts for adapting to climate change present new challenges for building physics - especially in the urgently needed renovation of existing buildings. While energy-efficient buildings require the integration of increasingly complex systems and the implementation of environmentally friendly and at the same time climate- and resource-friendly construction methods, it is also important to involve users and their needs more closely in planning and operation. Digitalisation in the building industry and computer-based methods play a key role here. Prof. Grün sees his main research areas in this area:

  • User comfort and indoor climate,
  • System integration efficient buildings,
  • Digital methods and processes.

The whole faculty and especially the IABP team are happy and wish him a good start!
