The faculty is pleased that Dr.-Ing.in Sara Uszball is Junior Professor in Behavior of resource-efficient building materials and structures under fire exposure at the faculty's Institute of Structural Design (KE) as of November 26, 2025.

Sara Uszball studied civil engineering with a focus on structural engineering at Ruhr University Bochum. During her subsequent doctoral studies, also at Ruhr University Bochum under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Markus Knobloch, she focused on the mechanical behavior of high-strength structural steels in the event of fire. The focus was on investigating the cooling phase.

With her appointment as junior professor, Sara Uszball will support both the KE's research and the fire safety department of the Materials Testing Institute (MPA) in Stuttgart. The focus will be on dealing with natural and anthropogenic hazards to buildings (structural hazard engineering). Particular attention will be paid to fires. In particular, she wants to promote sustainable and future-oriented construction methods and building materials through advanced knowledge of their behavior in the event of (natural) hazards, e.g., fires. Through the (further) development and optimization of fire protection measures with regard to safety, resilience, and sustainability, her research supports resilience-based design of structures and contributes to a sustainable construction industry in the long term.

Her research interests:
  • Behavior of materials and structural elements in the event of fire
  • Resource-efficient construction
