On 10th, 13th, 14th and 20th December 2021, Prof. Dr.-Ing. Rainer Helmig, head of the Department of Hydromechanics and Modelling of Hydrosystems of the Institute for Modelling Hydraulic and Environmental Systems (IWS-LH²) of the Faculty, gave an online course for PhD students at the Gdansk University of Technology, Gdansk/POLAND. The course dealt with flow and transport in porous media and was organised by Adam Szymkiewicz. The following topics were discussed:

  • Flow and transport in porous media: theory and engineering applications
  • Multiphase properties (micro and macro scale)
  • Physical and mathematical model concepts for multi-phase flow and transport
  • Discussion of different model formulations
  • Interfacial area concept, hysteresis and trapping

The Gdansk University of Technology has also a strong focus on environmental engineering and porous media research on different levels: from ice to the natural underground, from polymers to sediment transport – there are multiple common research interests. LH2 has maintained a long-lasting partnership with the Polish colleagues.
