GAMM junior research group founded at University of Stuttgart

One initiator comes from the faculty - First workshop on applied mathematics and mechanics was a success

At the end of 2019, a junior research group of the International Association of Applied Mathematics and Mechanics (Gesellschaft für angewandte Mathematik und Mechanik GAMM) was founded at the University of Stuttgart. After a first informal meeting at the Christmas market, the first workshop was held.

The program of the well-attended event included three exciting lectures on topics related to mechanics:

  • Prof. Tim Ricken (Fac. 6) presented his research on multi-scale and multiphase simulation,
  • Prof. Oliver Röhrle (IMSB) explained the modeling of musculoskeletal systems, and
  • Prof. Michael Hanss (Fac. 6) gave an introduction to the theory of possibilities and its application in uncertainty quantification.

Due to the extremely positive feedback of the participants further workshops are planned. For networking and to answer further questions, PhD students and lecturers met after the workshop in the Unithekle on the Campus Vaihingen.

The GAMM junior research group was founded by Henrik Ebel (Fac. 7 ITM), Lena Lambers (Fac. 6 ISD) and Renate Sachse (from our faculty, Institute for Structural Mechanics IBB). Prof. Oliver Röhrle, vice dean of the faculty, is one of the important supporters of the junior research group as local GAMM representative.

The aim of the group is to network Stuttgart doctoral students in the field of applied mathematics and mechanics and to offer them a platform for exchange. At the moment 70 PhD students and 10 "senior" members from 8 institutes are represented in the group. At least two meetings per year are planned.

Members of the group have no obligations, but can simply attend the meetings - but must be members of the GAMM. But that is no obstacle, explains Lena Lambers: "Don't worry, we can apply for a free 3-year GAMM membership for non-doctoral group members with all the benefits, such as the reduced conference fee for the GAMM meeting. After the 3 years you can decide for yourself if you want to stay a member or resign."
