Since December 15th, 2018, the faculty is represented by two professors in the 15-person Board of Academic Advisers to the Federal Minister of Transport and Digital Infrastructure and its ministry (BMVI). In addition to Prof. Markus Friedrich from the Institute of Road and Transport Design, who has been a member of the committee since 2014, Prof. Ullrich Martin from the Institute of Railways and Transportation Engineering has now also been appointed for a six-year term of office (until December 2024). Besides the University of Stuttgart, only two other universities are represented with more than one person on the Board of Academic Advisers.

The Board of Academic Advisers to the BMVI is an honorary, independent committee of top-class scientists that has been advising the ministers and the ministry on the preparation and performance of their respective tasks and  functions since beeing established in 1949. The panel supports minister and ministry with well-founded, independent scientific expertise. In this way, it contributes to making scientific findings available for use both in transport policy and technical work.

The focus of the Board’s activities is on the transport sector. However, digitisation and current issues on other cross-cutting topics, such as energy and the environment, are also included in the scientists' assessment for a modern transport policy.
