Study programs

The faculty 2: Civil and environmental engineering offers a total of 13 different study programs.

B. Sc. programs

After 180 ECTS credits (6 semesters), four German-language Bachelor programs lead to a first degree (Bachelor of Science B. Sc. or, as a minor subject, Bachelor of Arts B. A.). This degree already qualifies students for their first professional activities, but in particular for the subsequent Master's program.

M. Sc. programs

Four German-language Master's programs each build on the corresponding Bachelor's degree (or a degree similar in content, 180 ECTS credits or more), knowledge of German is also required. After 120 ECTS credits (4 semesters), the second degree, Master of Science M.Sc., is achieved. This degree opens up a wide range of professional activities as well as a doctorate.

Three English-language Master's programs each require a suitable previous degree (Bachelor's or diploma, at least 180 ECTS credits) as well as a corresponding knowledge of English. After 120 ECTS credits (4 semesters), a Master's degree is also awarded here.

Study while working

Two study while working programs each require a suitable previous degree (Bachelor or diploma, 180 ECTS credits or more), at least one (ICPL: two) year's work experience and corresponding knwoledge in English (ICPL) or German (MOB). After 120 ECTS credits, a (specialised) Master's degree is achieved here, too. There are separate (higher) tuition fees.

German language study programs (B. Sc. + M. Sc.)

The study of civil engineering begins with a three-semester, broad basic training (higher mathematics, technical mechanics, building physics, building construction, materials science, building management).

In the second half of the bachelor's programme, students acquire basic technical knowledge in the fields of construction and design, soil mechanics and structural analysis. First accents of their own are made possible by the elective areas of transport and water as well as the complementary modules, which can then be continued and expanded within the framework of the Master's programme.

A pre-study internship (at least 6 weeks) is required for the B. Sc. programme.

Civil Engineering as minor subject

If you choose civil engineering as a minor subject of a combined course of studies, you will only be taught the most important basics of civil engineering. The smaller volume (only 42 ECTS credits) makes clear restrictions in the areas of higher mathematics, technical mechanics, construction and design as well as structural analysis unavoidable. Elective modules (3 out of 8) enable students to set their own priorities in the areas of structural engineering, transport and water management. No pre-study internship

The major subject can be various humanities, but also vocational/technical education or the History of Natural Sciences and Technology. The Bachelor of Arts B.A. is awarded here.

This study program covers the entire life cycle of real estate - from planning, construction and marketing through to subsequent management during the operating phase, covering all aspects of real estate. The course teaches general (civil) engineering fundamentals (higher mathematics, technical mechanics, building physics, building construction, materials science, construction management, manufacturing processes, building technology). These are supplemented with general and real estate-specific basics from the fields of business administration, economics and law. The supplementary modules in the Bachelor's programme and the extended options in the Master's programme allow students to focus on their own areas.

A pre-study internship (at least 6 weeks) is required for the B. Sc. programme.

The course provides all necessary basics not only in the engineering sciences (technical and fluid mechanics, advanced mathematics, environmental analysis, thermodynamics, acoustics), but also in the natural sciences (biology, chemistry, physics, geology, meteorology) for a subsequent specialisation in subsequent master's courses in the environmental sector or for a first career entry. The scientifically and methodologically designed course also takes into account legal and political-economic aspects.

At the end of the Bachelor's programme, an initial focus (waste, wastewater, energy, water, air purification/cleaning, natural sciences, process engineering, transport) is possible, which is then continued in the Master's programme.

No pre-study internship

Transport engineers plan and operate traffic systems. After the analysis (spatial structure, mobility behaviour) they plan the transport offer (networks, timetables) including the necessary infrastructure, forecast the demand and determine the costs for construction and operation. They also deal with new drive technologies as well as information, vehicle and operating concepts. Important general (advanced mathematics, mechanics, electrical engineering, control engineering, communications engineering, business administration) and traffic-specific fundamentals (traffic planning, traffic engineering, electric drives, logistics functions, vehicles, infrastructure) are taught during their studies. Students can already set their own focus in the Bachelor's (compulsory) elective area and increasingly in the Master's program. The Bachelor's prepares students for the Master's program as well as for their first job.

No pre-study internship

English language Master's programs

The program is aimed at people who have already completed other (possibly also Master's) programs and now wish to acquire expertise in the promising field of numerical material and structural mechanics. A solid basic knowledge in theoretical and numerical methods of applied mechanics as well as in the fields of materials, continuum mechanics and computer-aided mechanics will be imparted. In particular, the great diversity of engineering modelling is emphasized. The students can set their own priorities. Thanks to their theoretical depth, graduates should be enabled to apply and further develop sophisticated calculation methods in material and structural mechanics in a responsible manner so that they are qualified for professions in a wide variety of fields, such as research and development engineer or leading technical consultant in industry, in the laboratory or at universities.

A sophisticated system of infrastructure facilities is one of the most important prerequisites for development. At international level, there is an urgent need for technical and managerial staff who are familiar with the design, planning and construction of necessary infrastructure facilities for transport, water and waste management in both urban and regional areas, taking into account economic, social, ecological and administrative requirements. Since 1983, the aim of the programme has been to qualify people from developing and emerging countries in both the public and private sectors. In addition to the classical technical infrastructure areas (transport, water supply and disposal, waste disposal, energy supply), urban and regional planning issues are dealt with and supplemented by ecological and socio-economic aspects of planning.

The growing demand for solutions in the field of water supply and disposal as well as ecological investments in water management requires well-trained, internationally oriented engineers. The WAREM program satisfies this demand by providing important content in these areas:

  • Groundwater management and geohydrology
  • Hydraulic engineering and river basin management
  • Sanitary engineering and water quality management

The program benefits from the excellent research facilities of the University of Stuttgart, such as the world's largest in-situ experimental facility for groundwater and contaminated site remediation (VEGAS), the largest teaching and research sewage treatment plant in Europe (LFKW) and the hydraulic engineering experimental hall for physical modelling. A double degree with the Technical University Chalmers/SWEDEN or the Technical University MARA in MALAYSIA is possible.

Study-while-working Master's programs

For years, there has been a shortage of suitable skilled employees and managerial staff in the fields of international construction and building law. The increasing internationalisation of companies active in the construction and real estate sector is exacerbating this situation. The English-language further education course ICPL takes this need from the economy into account. In particular, the course covers the technical, economic and legal aspects of international construction in theory and practice.

Building physics must satisfy the conflicting demands on building structures posed by rapid progress in construction technology, rising customer expectations, and increasing functional challenges. A necessary qualification for planners hence is the ability to see building physics and how its branches interact holistically. These range from energy and biohygrothermal models through acoustics and lighting design to indoor climate control and fire safety.
